Şcoala Normală Superioară Bucureşti (SNSB) was set up in 2001 on the model of the French École Normale Superiéure, by the initiative of a group of young researchers. Its mission is to guide towards research the best Romanian students, and to offer them a top-quality working environment. It contributes to society through the pursuit of education and research at the highest standards. As an institution, SNSB is founded on January 13, 2001, by a partnership agreement between the Foundation "Scoala Normala Superioara" (a non-governmental organization established by the Decision 186/F of the Tribunal of Bucharest on June 20, 2000), The "Simion Stoilow" Institute of Mathematics of the Romanian Academy and the Institute of Biochemistry of the Romanian Academy.

The scientific activities are supervised by a Scientific Committee formed by world-renowned experts in each discipline. SNSB has no tenure positions, and the lecture courses change on an yearly basis. The Scientific Committee selects every year the courses from a list proposed by, and open to academics and researchers around the world.

Each year the SNSB admits in each discipline, via a thorough selection process, up to ten student who have just completed two undergraduate years of study. They become SNSB students for three years. In the first year (the preliminary cycle) they graduate from their home university, and follow complementary courses at the SNSB. The last two SNSB years (the master cycle) is devoted to a Master's Program, offered by SNSB, finalized through a Master's thesis. SNSB charges no tuition fees. On the contrary, it grants scholarship in proportion to the academic achievements (as measured by final exams).

The activity of SNSB for the formation of excellent researchers in sciences in Romania, has a permanent support from the Service de Cooperation de l'Ambassade de France a Bucarest (former SCAC) and from some strategic partners:
