Supporting participation of Uganda in the International Mathematical Olympiads

IMO team Uganda

Period: January-July 2019.
At a glance:
  • Total donations until May 29, 2019: $7914, wired and received by the Uganda Mathematical Society.
  • 13 interactive lessons (3 hours each) online through videoconferencing between March - June 2019, given by former olympiad participants from Romania.
  • Project (in Romanian)
Statement: I believe that mathematical education is the key to success in the 21st century, for the developed as well as for the poorest countries of the world. As a Romanian student in the 1990's, I benefited myself from scholarships from richer countries. They greatly facilitated my education. I wish that the excellent students of today's poor countries get the same type of help I got at their age, encouraging them to pursue a career in mathematics.
Goal: I want to strengthen participation in the International Mathematical Olympiad for teams from developing sub-Saharan African countries like Uganda. The IMO is the leading international math competition for high-school students, taking place annually since 1959. To get an idea about what it is like for a student to qualify for the IMO but not be able to make the trip, read here.

    Training lessons:
  • March 1, 2019: A first training session via tele-conferencing was offered by Dragos Manea: introduction to combinatorics - arrangements, permutations, combinations.
  • March 6, 2019: I have animated a training session to evaluate their overall level. There was a power outage in Makerere University, so I could not receive any video stream from them, they were on audio only.
  • March 12, 2019: Again myself, on: the irrationality of \sqrt{2}; the functional equation f(x+y) = f(x)+f(y); some geometry (this seem to be the strong point). Their audio was not that good, unfortunately. The students rated our audio communication 9/10 and the blackboard image 6/10.
  • March 15, 2019: Lucian Țurea gave an introductory lesson on number theory: existence of the modular inverse of a number a modulo n if (a,n)=1.
  • March 18, 2019: Sergiu Moroianu III. We reviewed elementary properties of the circle and inscriptible quadrilaterals.
  • March 20, 2019: Radu Bumbăcea. Combinatorics.
  • May 3, 2019: Sergiu Moroianu IV: the Euler line; a proof of Thales using areas; sequances defined by reccurence relations (Fibonacci); a problem with ants falling from the sky on a rod.
  • May 20, 2019: Radu Bumbăcea II: Problems with reccursion and induction.
  • May 24, 2019: Radu Bumbăcea III: Reccursion and induction.
  • May 28, 2019: Liviu Păunescu: The pigeonhole principle - theory and examples.
  • May 29, 2019: Radu Bumbăcea IV: More induction and reccursion. This was Radu's final lesson, as he is about to leave for a summer math camp in the USA. Thanks a lot Radu for your generosity!
  • June 7, 2019: Sergiu Moroianu V: Finished the problem with ants falling from the sky. Tournament problems (pigeonhole principle). Fun problems.
  • June 12, 2019: Sergiu Moroianu VI: Problem with moves of a colored polygon. A diophantine equation with prime unknowns. Geometry.
  • June 14, 2019: Flavian Georgescu: chordal line of two circles and applications.
  • Private donations: To protect your privacy while keeping the donation process transparent, I will mention your first name and last name initial.
  • On April 20 I have wired $3868 (from private donations) to the Uganda Math Society. They received it on April 25, 2019.
  • On May 20 I have wired $646 from private donations to the Uganda Math Society.
  • As of November 15, 2019 we have gathered $946, to be used for supporting Uganda's participation in IMO2020.
  • Thanks a lot for your donation!
    Institutional donations:
  • On April 20 the SSMR has wired $3400 to the Uganda Math Society, from a generous sponsorship of Frame Film. They received it on March 19, 2019.
  • Your company too may support Uganda's participation in the IMO by sponsoring the SSMR (Societatea de Stiinte Matematice din Romania). The SSMR has pledged to support its counterpart, the Uganda Mathematical Society, the organizer of math olympiads in Uganda, by awarding them a grant from the proceeds of sponsorships or donations specifically intended for the mathUganda project. Here is an article in the Uganda press about the SSMR-UMS cooperation.
    Various grant applications:
  • I applied for a contribution from the Skyhook Foundation.
  • I had submitted an application with Elsevier for a Philanthropy grant aimed at supporting activities to advance mathematical sciences in developing nations. The application was rejected on 06.03.19.
